Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I no longer live in the Ancient Parish of Walton but I used to. Would I still qualify for your sheltered housing?
A. Generally no. The Charity can usually only accept applications for sheltered housing from current residents of the Ancient parish.
Q. I no longer live in the borough of Elmbridge but I used to. Am I eligible to apply to live at Sherwood House?
A. Yes. Both current and former residents of the Borough of Elmbridge may apply to live at Sherwood House.
Q. I have a property to sell. Can I still apply?
A. For sheltered housing it would depend on the value of the property and other assets you might have. Trustees would also take into account your housing needs and what housing options would be available to you if the Charity did not assist you. For Sherwood House the value of your property and other assets is much less of a consideration, however, your liability for fees at Sherwood House is subjectto the value of these assets. All applications are welcome and are assessed individually.
Q. I don't think I could afford your charges. Is there any help I could get?
A. Yes! For those applying for sheltered housing, Housing Benefit may be available subject to your savings and income. In addition, those qualifying for Housing Benefit will also qualify for Supporting People benefit. The Charity’s Welfare Office can help you make an application for these and other welfare benefits that you might be entitled to.
For those wishing to move to Sherwood House, financial help may be available through Social Services, subject to their assessment of your care needs. The Charity can accept a limited number of applications from people receiving Social Services assistance. For further information contact the Director of Residential and Care Services on 0203 328 0241 or email nlucas@waltoncharity.org.uk
Q. I quite like having neighbours of my own age group living around me but would I have to take part in all the social activities even if I didn’t want to?
A. No. You choose what you want to do. You will not be pressurised by anyone to take part in any of the social activities.
Q. I have a home help. Can they still call on me?
A. In sheltered housing, yes. At Sherwood House full care is provided and there would be no need for you to purchase any other help.
Q. Are there set visiting times?
A. No. Your visitors come and go as they please.
Q. I have friends or relatives who would like to stay with me occasionally. Is this possible?
A. Yes. Both sheltered housing schemes have guest rooms for which the Charity makes a modest charge.
Q. Does the Charity consult with me about how your services are provided?
A. Yes. Within sheltered housing there are arrangements for residents to elect a forum who meet with both Trustees and staff of the Charity. Any resident may stand for election. For Sherwood House, residents have opportunities to meet with Trustees from time to time. The Charity ensures all residents are kept informed of anything that affects their home or the services we provide.
