Walton on Thames Charity is pleased to report that the sale of its former sheltered housing scheme, Hylton Lodge, has now completed. The property is now owned by Shanly Homes, who will be redeveloping the site in due course.
Sherwood House held their Christmas party last Saturday. Residents, families and staff enjoyed traditional christmas dinner and other festive treats on Saturday 3rd December. As ever it was extremely popular and everyone had a great time!

The exciting project to transform overgrown riverbank land into a nature trail and outdoor education centre continues. A group of volunteers helped with the clearance on the Burhill allotment site on Friday 21st October. Click on the link for more details.

The exhibition at Riverhouse is part of a series of events being held at Riverhouse this month as part of the 800 year anniversary celebrations by the Walton on Thames Charity. There will also be a debate next Thursday 13th October from 8pm at Riverhouse titled “Have Charities a Role to Play in Today’s Big Society?”. This will be panelled by MP Dominic Raab, Nicki Shaw the CEO of Princess Alice Hospice, Paul Palmer- Professor of Voluntary Sector Management and Robert Moran CEO Of Elmbridge Borough Council. Members of the public are invited to apply for tickets to be part of the audience and have the chance to ask questions. If you are interested please apply to 800years@gmail.com or in writing to Riverhouse. We also have a Royston Pike lecture being held at Riverhouse on Tuesday 18th October from 8pm titled “Walton Charity’s 800 Years of Giving”, presented by David Nash, Vice-Chairman or Trustees and author of our new history book “I Give and Bequeath”. An exhibition is now open at Riverhouse, Manor Road celebrating the fascinating history of the Walton on Thames Charity. The exhibition got off to a great start at the well attended opening night. Birds of Prey, a demonstration of dressage by Veronica Fraser-Harris and her champion horse Naranjal and pony rides were just some of the attractions on offer at the Walton Community Day held this Saturday 17th on Severn Drive Green.
We will be holding a Scarecrow competion at our Community Day. This is open to everyone- just make sure you deliver your creation to the Severn Drive green by 12 noon on 17th September and have handed in your entry form by 14th September. See poster for details. Walton-on-Thames Charity held a birthday tea in honour of Mayfield resident Dee Cole’s 100th birthday.
Walton-on-Thames Charity has secured funds fromthe Heritage Lottery Fund and RC Sherriff, to carry out an oral history project with the pupils of Walton Oak School.
In the spirit of Christmas there was room at our Inn! as we opened the doors of our care home - Sherwood House - to older residents of Elmbridge for Christmas Day lunch.

Walton on Thames Charity has issued revised plans for the refurbishment of Sherwood House. A full statement can be viewed by clicking on the attached document.
The Trustees of Walton on Thames Charity are making a £20,000 investment in upgrading the TV aerial equipment at Mayfield and Fenner House. The new equipment will ensure we’re ready for the changeover to the digital signal due to go live in 2012. Other advantages to residents are the availability of Freesat channels, better reception for newer TV equipment and the option to subscribe to Sky channels. Works are starting on 2nd March and should be complete by 20th March.

Jackie Lodge has been appointed the Charity’s new Chief Executive following the retirement of our our previous chief Executive. Jackie took up her new post form 9th June. Jackie said "I ’m delighted to working with a local charity that is able to do so much for the community it serves."

Sherwood House residents acquire giant scrabble board

Residents of Walton Charity’s Care Home, Sherwood House have taken delivery of a new activity in the form of a giant Scrabble board. The Scrabble board stands nearly 2 metres high making it easy for residents to see and play. Director of Residential and Care Services for the Charity, Nigel Lucas, said ‘we were so lucky to get it. Sadly the company producing them will shortly cease trading and we’ve managed to buy one of the last 100 left. All credit though goes to the residents and staff at Sherwood House who raised over £300 to buy it by holding a raffle, taking part in the Eden Project Big Lunch and entering and winning a scarecrow competition!’ Residents are now seeking to form a team and will soon be looking to take on others!

Burhill recovery programme gets underway

Allotment holders at Burhill may have noticed a few extra people on site on Tuesday 21st June. A group of volunteers from local pallet and container pooling company CHEP were helping out with the first stage of the recovery programme set to transform the land backing onto the River Mole at Burhill Allotment site.

Last weekend the Walton on Thames Charity joined in the nationwide event “The Big Lunch”. The Big Lunch is a nationwide community event which aims to get as many people as possible across the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a “simple act of community, friendship and fun”.

Charity’s Residents Celebrate Royal Wedding

Residents from the Charity’s two sheltered housing schemes joined residents at the Charity’s care home, Sherwood House, to celebrate the Royal Wedding. The ceremony was watched on the newly installed 50" Television. The Sherwood House’s catering staff prepared cakes for the occasion. Residents reported that they had a great time and expressed their appreciation for the efforts of the staff.
