A new Saturday Night project is now open to all young people age 11 to 17 years who live in Walton on Thames. The project, based at Walton’s Xcel Leisure Complex, will provide a safe place for young people and offers a wide menu of sporting activities.

Activities on offer include football, swimming, basketball and badminton, but additional staff will be on hand in the “chill out zone” for those who just want to spend time relaxing in a safe, supported environment.

Walton Charity’s Community Grant will provide funding to provide additional youth workers and ensure that disadvantaged young people will be able to attend the project free of charge.  Funding for the project has also been provided by Sport England and Active Surrey.

The project is supported by Elmbridge Borough Council and Surrey Family Service who hope that offering young people access to the leisure centre will divert them from anti-social behaviour and provide them with the opportunity to learn a new sport and get active.

James Lovell, Active Surrey’s Communities Lead said “Active Surrey is proud to have worked in partnership to support the development of the Walton Xcel Saturday Night Project. It is important that we provide young people a safe place, where they can develop a lifetime habit of physical activity.”

It is hoped to add a fitness class to the Saturday Night project soon, so that Zumba, spinning, circuits or yoga classes can be offered.
