Sheltered Housing

“Not everyone is visibly homeless, I had no fixed address and was sofa surfing”

After working locally as a Head Gardener for fifteen years, I was made redundant and found myself sofa surfing with friends. This went on for a couple of months and I felt I had definitely outstayed my welcome!

I contacted the Citizens Advice Bureau and they suggested registering with Elmbridge Borough Council’s Housing Department.  Sadly, they told me that my chances of being rehoused were extremely slim, as I have no dependants.

I’d heard of a local homeless charity called Elmbridge Rentstart*, so I went along to meet them.  They referred me to Walton Charity as they thought they may be able to support me in their sheltered housing.  They quickly offered short term accommodation in the guest room and I was there for five months, until a permanent flat became available.

I’m so happy to be independent again and have a place to call my own again.
