Stay & Play:
A Magical Craft Day in Elmbridge
With funding from a Walton Charity Community Grant and the R.C. Sherriff Trust, Home Start Elmbridge ran a magical craft afternoon during the school summer holidays. The ‘Stay and Play’ session took place at Burview Hall (Mencap’s building) in Walton on 25th July and was open to Home-Start families who live in Elmbridge and have been identified with a child under the age of 5 years old, with additional needs.
During the afternoon, Magpies and Moonbeams ran a ‘Cardboard Creations’ craft workshop building a large castle for the children and their parents to decorate and then play in afterwards. Using up cycled materials that are tactile and
multi-sensory, they also created dragon and unicorn headdresses. The use of these materials was particularly important and appealing to some of the children who Home-Start Elmbridge support as they may have profound learning disabilities or limited cognitive abilities.
The families had a fun packed time and loads to do - lots of games and toys, a bouncy castle set up in the garden and access to Burview Hall’s multi-sensory room.
The play afternoon was an ideal opportunity for parents and children to meet others experiencing similar challenges in a relaxed, non-judgemental environment. They were able to share coping strategies and insights into other sources of support. They also had Home-Start staff and volunteers on hand to help with the children. A fabulous day was had by all!
